Looking back and bringing it forward; the advertisements of yesteryear

There's a lot to be said for vintage ads.  They now stand as a type of time catalogue for what people were wearing/eating/buying/wanting many years before our existence...

Most will stop and stare at one in wonder and curiosity. What does it mean? How did they come up with the concept? Is that improper/racist/sexist/provocative? Do I need to buy that, to feel/look like them? Do I go to that destination to find out MORE? Can that product really DO that? They were powerful and influential works of art/propaganda- made to arouse our minds and allow our imaginations to run free.

In contrast to many of today's very bland advertisements, which can blatantly force an idea onto us, vintage ads were, at the very least, interesting.

Here are a few of my favourites:

Vintage Icon: Elizabeth Taylor

Dame Elizabeth Taylor has been famous for her love affairs, seven husbands, acting career, perfume line, AIDS activism and stunning beauty. What we here at PVD love her for most however, is for her passion for extravagant jewellery, most of which was given to her by the men in her life. Her most celebrated piece is the Krupp Diamond, given to her by her then husband Richard Burton. It is a piece which to this day, is rarely absent from her finger during public appearances, even wearing it in many of her films!

"I mean, how many young women get a set of rubies just for doing something wholesome like swimming laps? Or win a diamond ring at Ping-Pong with their husband...? Well, I did, and for all of these memories and the people in my life I feel blessed."

(the fabulous) Elizabeth Taylor.

Gil Elvgren... yep. We're a fan!

art works by Gil Elvgren

Gil Elvgren (March 15, 1914 – February 29, 1980), born Gillette Elvgren, was an American painter of pin-up girls, advertising and illustration. Elvgren was one of the more important pin-up and glamour artists of the twentieth century.

You may be familiar with some or his works. If not, here's a small sample of them:

PVD will be featuring some of Gil's fine art works with our pretty pieces in our next collection.

We think it sets the mood. Don't you???
